Everyone knows the purpose of having a resume on hand at an interview, but what is the purpose of a reference list?
Some think that it’s a way for a potential employer to check up on dates of past employment and work behavior. Although, sometimes contributing factors; references help set you apart from another candidate. If your references are up to date and accurate, it will make you look much better to a potential employer.
Here are a few tips for a good reference list:
· Select top three employers
· Contact perspective references for permission to provide their contact information
· Only use employers that willgive you a positive review
· Send over an up to date resume to refresh a previous employer’s memory
· Ensure contact information is kept up to date
Recent graduate and don’t have any employers for reference? Extracurricular advisors, college administrators, and professors are beneficial.
Some interviewers ask for a letter of recommendation from a past employer. This would include:
· Why they feel you are qualified for the type of position you will be applying for
· Their opinion of you both professionally and personally
· How long and in what capacity they have known you
It is important to ask for a recommendation letter when leaving a job. You never know when some companies might ask for one. This way you’re not scrambling at the last minute to find an employer to write it for you.
Always remember, references could be the final deciding factor for a job offer.
