Social Networking, New Age Job Board?

The first thing job-help gurus instruct job seekers to do is to clean up their social networking pages— Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, etc.— in the instance that employers look you up. But did you ever consider using social networking as a type of job board?

Social Networking sites started out as a way of connecting with friends, like Myspace being the crazy to high school students. Soon after Facebook was introduced to college students, which quickly became a part of everyone's daily lives. After being introduced to college students, Facebook was then added to high schools, and now everyone, including companies have accounts.

Some believe that social networking is a great advancement for job recruiting, especially since the recession hit. Typical job boards a producing minimal results for job seekers. These sites are becoming the new trend of recruiting.

Think of your pages and company pages as a preliminary interview. Not only will you gather information about open jobs, but you can gain information about the company.

Within 2009, a recent addition to the Facebook site is the use of "Fan Pages". These pages are mostly created by companies like Papa John's, Victoria Secret, bars and restaurants, etc. These pages are a form of free PR for companies. As a job seeker, you will not only be able to get a background on a company, but see promotions, their fan base, and links posted. This allows you to form a preliminary understanding of the company and whether or not you would like to work there.

Twitter has exploded since its beginning in early 2009. Not only are users able to post what they're thinking, doing, retweeting, etc., but as another outlet of PR. Top 50 employers using Twitter include Allstate Insurance, Burger King, AT&T, Verizon, Intel, Keller Williams Reality. These special accounts like @ATTjobs, @JobsatIntel, @KTPA Careers are solely for posting jobs, separate from companies' other Twitter accounts. The job accounts not only advertise for positions open, they supply users with a link to the position description and application.

Among the masses, Linkedin is one of the most professionally arranged social networking sites. With the ability for users to informally upload their resume and make connections with other professionals around the country, the site is a job seeker and recruiters' dream. There is an executive for every Fortune 500 company with a Linkedin profile. All a company needs to search is, for example, "Marketing Director", all Linkedin users with job experience (present or past) will be listed and vice versa. Job seekers can search jobs for companies, with profiles on the sites, for available positions.

Tired of using the same old job boards, with little to no results? Finding the same jobs over and over? Try something new, use social networking sites!
