Tests earn good grades in school. Some tests earn a good job!
Assessments tests are often used by employers are a screening mechanism. Other names include (career) aptitude test or employment test. No matter the name, all cover a similar range of questions inquiring personal strengths and weaknesses. Some topics cover hobbies/interests, style of working, and interaction with others.
Unlike Math or History test that need to be studied for, assessment testing is nothing to be stress over. The secret formula is being honest, relaxed, and going with your gut. There is no right or wrong answer. Figuring out who you are as a person and a worker is the focus, not whether you can find the circumference of a circle. It is, simply, to see if you are the right fit for a position.
Some types of assessment tests are via phone, survey online, or a paper questionnaire. These typically take around an hour to complete. According to Cherly Bouxton of the Wall Street Journal, administrators may ask follow-up questions to get a better sense of specific answers. This is to benefit both parties. Having the ability to better explain your answers gives the administrator and/or potential employer a better understanding of your answers, while you can give examples and make yourself look better.
Here are 5 example questions:
- When making decisions do you try to remain objective and consider the facts or do you allow your feelings and the effect of the decision of others to influence your decision?
- Are you a detail person or do you go with the flow?
- Are you drawn to find the reason why things are the way they are or are you content to accept them that way?
- Which of the following best describes your ability to speak in a way that convinces others of your point of view.
- How do you prefer to learn -- by being shown diagrams and pictures or through experiments and activities?
All questions are multiple choice having you choose the best answer out of five. Go with your instincts and be honest.
