How Teens Generate Job Leads

Generating job leads is much different depending on where you are on the job experience ladder. For those with many years under their belt, the process isn't as frightening compared to those who are new to the game. With teens facing some serious difficulties finding employment, it is important that they look to the right resources.

Online job boards, such as Monster and CareerBuilder, are the most commonly used resources for full and part time positions, but can be difficult to use. Teens would need to sift through which jobs are for them and which aren't. Luckily, there are numerous websites like SnagAJob, that focused on teen employment. These can be beneficial because they are strictly directed toward teen employment. But it's important to remember that not all leads come from the internet!

The main resource for teens, that is more often than not overlooked, is a school Guidance Counselor. They know most available, local jobs that are a great fit for teens. All he/she needs to do is ask for help. A counselor can help you with every aspect of the job search, including putting together a resume and other interview preparation.

Another resource teens should develop early is NETWORKING! The best way to begin networking is to speak with teachers, coaches, family, friends, etc. Majority of job leads are through networking, which then leads to referrals. People are usually willing and eager to help.

Babysitting is one of the most common jobs through a referral. It may be directly with the person asked or through someone they know. Either way babysitting is a great starting job for teens because teens of the flexibility. Teens can balance with their school and other activities.

Learning to balance work and school is the most important lesson teens will learn, so start early!
