Is One Resume Enough?

Job seekers are are applying for more and more jobs than before, and they're not all the same. Because of the uncertain job market, they are applying for a mix of full-time and part-time positions. Different resumes, or target resumes, are necessary for the different jobs you apply.

Using a professional resume, for example, with past internships and/or professional work experience when interviewing at a restaurant or retail store probably isn't the best idea. A potential employer will think that you're either applying in the wrong field or over qualified. Either way, chances are you won't get the job.

Having target resumes solves this problem for job seekers. Focus the resume on the position or company you are applying with relevant qualifications. If you are applying for a retail position, direct you're resume toward your past retail experience. If you are applying for a company sales position, direct you're resume toward your sales experience. A great tip is look at keywords in the job description/requirements and use them in your resume.

Its not that you shouldn't highlight other experience if you have it. "Related Experience" and "Experience" is a good way to have a balance of all your previous work. An employer can then see how rounded you are as employee and how many years you have been working. Just don't make irrelevant employment the focal point of the resume or the interview.

Finally, don't forget to change your employment objective!
